Healthcare
Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation. What steps would you take as a state representative to ensure access to affordable healthcare, including mental health services, for residents who are currently uninsured or underserved in your district?
Push to lower the costs of prescription drugs without government price fixing, and providing upfront transparency of medical costs by creating more competition among healthcare providers. By eliminating laws that restrict competition companies will adjust their prices to the market which they serve. Also it is important that insurance laws ensure mental health services are covered at the same level as physical health services. There are a lot of business in district 148 and offering business tax incentives for companies who provide insurance to their employees.
Education
What measures would you support to ensure adequate state funding for public schools and accountability for taxpayer funds used in voucher or education savings account programs?
I support Merit and Performance-Based Teacher Allotments. This is a merit-based teacher pay scales, as many other industries the top performers are paid more. Under this model, state funding increases are directed straight to top-performing educators in high-need classrooms. Teachers are the first and most important part of a child’s education and must be compensated for their work (HB2). To protect taxpayer funds regarding accountability simply have the vouchers processed and managed through a Centralized Comptroller Oversight, funds must flow through state-managed accounts. Funds should be restricted to pre-approved vendors for accredited tuition, licensed therapies, and qualified educational materials.
Issues
What are the two most pressing issues unique to your district, and what specific, measurable actions would you take to address them during your term?
Issue one, the large number of human sex trafficking and prostitution in 148. I will push to expand laws on hourly rate Adult only motels, and Adult only novelty stores, strip clubs, requiring larger variance in distance between schools and school activity centers (ex Delmar Stadium). Issue two, the dilapidated and abandon stores, malls and strip centers. Work with private developers to buy and renovate empty buildings with Property Tax Abatements, temporary tax freezes or reductions for developers who fix abandoned storefronts to significantly improve structural renovations. Provide demolition and remediation grants demolish unusable buildings, for new development. Solving both issues will create a safter, cleaner environment to live
