Backlog
How will you address the case backlog in your court to ensure timely resolution for all parties?
I use a scheduling order that lays out future settings at the outset of a case. Parties know exactly what timelines to expect up front and are put on notice that I expect cases to be resolved or set for trial within the timeframe provided in the scheduling order. Issues may arise that require parties to request extra time on a case, but the scheduling order ensures that all cases are resolved in a timely manner - which cuts down on creating a backlog.
Efficiency/accessibility
How will you ensure efficient and equitable resolution of matters that come before your court, and that all residents — regardless of their financial means — have meaningful access to legal resources?
I am committed to procedural fairness, ease of access to courts, and community outreach. Individuals who are unable to afford legal representation can have a skilled attorney appointed to represent them at no cost. Offering virtual and hybrid docket options avoids certain physical and financial barriers like taking time off from work, arranging childcare, or paying for transportation and parking. My scheduling order sets realistic deadlines so that cases do not linger for an unnecessary amount of time. I run my court in a manner that ensures ALL who enter feel heard, seen, and respected. I provide qualified, certified court interpreters to individuals to remove any language barriers. I also teach community members about the law.
