Qualifications
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you forthis position?
For 17 years, I served Texas as the elected District Attorney of Montgomery County, leading a major prosecutorial office, protecting victims and families, and managing taxpayer resources with discipline and accountability. I worked directly with the Texas Legislature to help advance laws strengthening public safety, supporting law enforcement, and protecting victims statewide. I also prosecuted cases involving human smuggling, cartel activity, and crimes linked to the unsecured southern border. This combination of executive leadership, legislative experience, and firsthand public-safety expertise uniquely qualifies me to serve as State Senator.
Healthcare
Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation. What steps would you take as a state senator to ensure access to affordable healthcare, including mental health services, for Texans who are currently uninsured or underserved?
Affordability matters to Texans, whether they are paying taxes or insurance premiums. As a new senator, my colleagues and I are examining how insurance can be made more affordable, and I will bring that same focus to healthcare. I support increasing competition, improving price transparency, reducing unnecessary administrative costs, expanding telehealth, and strengthening rural and community healthcare. We must also improve access to mental health services through early intervention, crisis care, and a stronger behavioral health workforce, while avoiding policies that simply shift higher costs onto families, employers, or taxpayers.
Education
What measures would you support to ensure adequate state funding for public schools and accountability for taxpayer funds used in voucher or education savings account programs?
Texas must meet its constitutional responsibility to support strong public schools while ensuring taxpayer dollars are used effectively and transparently. I support appropriate funding for classroom instruction, teachers, student safety, and programs that improve student outcomes. Any government program, including education savings accounts, should include regular audits and safeguards against fraud or misuse. I am continuing to review specific proposals and will evaluate each based on its impact on students, families, public schools, and taxpayers.
Housing
What specific actions would you take to address the cost of living pressures facing Texans, including rising property taxes, homeowner and renter insurance costs, and housing affordability?
Texans need relief from the rising costs of owning or renting a home. I will work to reduce property taxes, improve insurance affordability, and remove unnecessary barriers to new housing. Governor Abbott has proposed eliminating school-district property taxes on homesteads, with the state assuming a greater share of school funding—a change estimated to cut many homeowners’ total property-tax bills by more than half. Lt. Governor Patrick’s ‘Operation Double Nickel’ would lower the qualifying age for the homestead property-tax freeze from 65 to 55 while also increasing homestead exemptions
