Infrastructure
What is your approach to federal infrastructure investment, and how would you prioritize funding for energy, transportation, flood mitigation, and resilience needs in your district?
Federal infrastructure investment should target the neighborhoods and risks we’ve ignored too long. I’ll fight for funding to rebuild disinvested communities: bringing back grocery stores, small businesses, and essential services within walking distance. On resilience, flood mitigation comes first. Houston has endured seven federally declared disasters in a decade, and we need accurate science to build smart, not just fast. That’s why I’ve pushed to protect NOAA’s flood research and forecasting tools, like Atlas 14, that set our flood standards. Energy and transportation dollars must be paired with that same resilience lens, so every investment strengthens the district instead of just patching it.
Inflation
If elected to office, what will you do to address rising costs, especially with regard to groceries, childcare, and housing?
Families in TX-18 are being squeezed from every direction. Costs for things like groceries, child care, and housing keep climbing while wages stay flat. That’s not an accident. It’s the result of corporate price gouging and policies that protect billionaires over working people. I’ve co-sponsored legislation to take on the wealthy special interests driving up costs and to strengthen protections like SNAP and ACA subsidies that families rely on. In Congress, I’ll keep fighting for policies that put money back in people’s pockets: affordable child care, lower housing costs, and real accountability for corporations padding profits at our expense.
Immigration
What is your position on federal immigration enforcement and detention policies? What specific changes, if any, would you support to how those policies are implemented?
Our immigration system is broken and needs fixing with compassion, not cruelty. I’ve toured detention facilities, including Dilley, and heard firsthand accounts of inadequate medical care and family separation. That’s unacceptable. I support closing facilities like Dilley, protecting Dreamers through DACA, and creating a path to citizenship. Enforcement should target genuine safety threats, not families seeking a better life.
Voting
What changes, if any, to current laws related to voter registration, voter ID, and mail-in ballots would you support and why?
Every American deserves a voice in our democracy, and I’ll fight to protect that right. When Texas passed voter suppression laws, I sued Governor Abbott and fought back in court. I also support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to strengthen protections nationwide. The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and Congress cannot stand by while it is dismantled piece by piece.
