Accountability
What will you do to promote the just, prompt, and affordable resolution of civil cases that come before your court?
I am prepared; I have read the pleadings that have been filed; I provide each party adequate time to argue; I ask any questions that I have; and I rule promptly. I call cases to trial within one-year of being filed. I grant continuances when warranted and deny same if necessary. I provide each side with sufficient time to properly select a jury of their peers and will ensure that each party who appears before the court feels heard, is treated with respect and dignity and receives the best that justice has to provide.
Court System
What specific actions would you take to ensure the timely resolution of cases while maintaining fairness for all parties?
I set cases for trial one -year after the Defendant files its Original Answer. My team and I follow cases that have not been active for 6 months and call them in for a status conference to make sure the case remains moving. I encourage all parties to attend mediation, if they believe it will help. I do not order anyone to mediation if they believe it will be a waste of money or time. I often try to discuss settlement with the parties and see if I can help them overcome the gap or blockade which has foreclosed settlement. I have held settlement conferences at the courthouse where 10-12 cases appear and mediators for a greatly reduced fee mediate each case. The success rate has been over 80%.
