County Attorney
Jacqueline Lucci Smith
Republican
Qualifications
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I bring more than three decades of legal, judicial, and public service experience. I was elected Judge of Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 2 in 2006, inheriting one of the county’s most troubled dockets. I cleared years of backlog, presided over hundreds of jury trials, and earned my reputation for sound judgment, fairness and impartiality. I have also served as Assistant Harris County Attorney and then as Director of Tax Services at the Harris County Tax Office, helping shape reforms that benefited taxpayers. Since then, I’ve run my own law firm, and worked as a mediator and arbitrator. Few candidates for this office have run a courtroom, managed a legal staff, and built a private practice. I have accomplished all three.
Priorities
What are your top priorities, and what specific steps would you take to address each of them?
My top priorities are upholding the rule of law, protecting taxpayer dollars, and supporting public safety. I will give candid, independent legal advice to county officials, even when unpopular, to protect the county from costly legal exposure. I’ve already shown what that looks like: I warned Houston City Council that a policy exceeding legal authority would cost public safety funding and put officers and communities at risk. As County Attorney, I will apply that same scrutiny to the county’s budget so taxpayer dollars are spent lawfully. These priorities reflect my record of sound legal judgment under real pressure, on the bench and before elected bodies, not politically-motivated promises made for the first time on the campaign trail.
