Accountability
What will you do to promote the just, prompt, and affordable resolution of cases that come before your court?
I believe that shorter resets make cases move at a more reasonable pace. Giving both sides enough time to review evidence and prepare for the next steps keeps cases moving toward a resolution and upholds the rights of everyone involved.
Bail
In setting bail amounts, how will you balance Texas’s constitutionally mandated bail requirements with other conditions of release including minimizing any public safety threat the defendant may present to the community? Please discuss both first time and repeat offenders.
The Texas constitution makes clear that most defendants have a right to bail and there are very limited times when the denial of bail is allowed. Taking the bench with the clear understanding that most people with cases in front of me have a constitutional right to bail, the focus would have to turn to community safety concerns. Making sure that repeat offenders, especially those that have committed violent offenses, are held at high bonds that ensures everyone’s safety.
