Judge, County Probate Court No. 4

Issues
What do you see as the most significant issues currently facing the probate court system and how will you address them?
The main problems with probate courts are delay, oversight, and access. Procedural bottlenecks can delay urgent cases and drive up costs while placing a person’s liberty, health, and finances in the hands of another. Justice in probate court shouldn’t be a function of income, neighborhood, or the ability to hire counsel. To address these issues, I will set clear deadlines, closely monitor guardianship cases, act quickly when required reports are missing, and make court procedures easier. Efficiency cannot come at the cost of fairness. I will apply the law fairly and consistently, ensure the court is accessible to everyone, and remember that every case involves real people and families going through difficult times.
Guardianship
What will you do to ensure an effective and coordinated process for dealing with guardianship cases, especially those involving parties who are disabled or elderly?
Guardianship cases have a special responsibility for the probate court: to protect vulnerable people while maintaining as much independence as possible. I would improve coordination of the process by setting clear timelines to reduce unnecessary delays, clarifying the role of investigators, lawyers, medical professionals, guardians, and families, and ensuring hearings are accessible to elderly and disabled participants. The court must consider all alternatives to guardianship that are less restrictive. If a guardian is appointed, the court’s responsibility doesn’t end at the appointment. The court must continue reviewing required reports and financial records, address problems when they arise, and restore rights as soon as practicable.
