Judge, County Civil Court at Law No. 4

Backlog
How will you address the case backlog in your court to ensure timely resolution for all parties?
Since taking the bench, cutting backlog has been daily work, not a talking point. My court resolves civil cases in about 365 days, well within state benchmarks. I helped establish Harris County’s first civil associate judge court, adding capacity to move pretrial matters without waiting on one judge’s calendar, and worked across party lines to create County Court at Law No. 5, the first new civil court here since 1977. As a former litigator who handled over 1,000 cases in my career, I know firsthand what genuinely slows cases down, letting me set realistic deadlines. As a first generation immigrant raised in Houston, I bring emotional intelligence that keeps efficiency paired with fairness.
Efficiency/accessibility
How will you ensure efficient and equitable resolution of matters that come before your court, and that all residents — regardless of their financial means — have meaningful access to legal resources?
Justice shouldn’t require a lawyer’s fee to be understood. Many litigants in my court represent themselves, and I make sure my courtroom explains procedure in plain language, not just legal shorthand that favors those who can afford counsel. I approve fee waivers for those who qualify and ensure interpreters are available so language is never a barrier to being heard. As a litigator who tried cases for both firms and everyday clients, I’ve seen how intimidating a courtroom can feel, and I run ours so every party, represented or not, understands what’s happening and why. As a first generation immigrant raised in Houston, I know what it means to navigate systems not built with you in mind, and that shapes how accessible I make court everyday.
