Backlog
How will you address the case backlog in your court to ensure timely resolution for all parties?
Both defense attorneys and prosecutors must be afforded reasonable time to conduct thorough investigations and prepare their cases effectively. When a case approaches a certain age, the court should require attorneys to provide a status update regarding any outstanding evidence or pending issues. At that stage, clear communication with the court is critical to assess the trajectory of the case and determine whether it is progressing appropriately. If a case has stalled due to inaction, the court should implement shorter resets and schedule status conferences for movement. Detained cases must be treated with heightened urgency. Individuals in custody should not remain detained longer than necessary, due to avoidable delays.
Efficiency/accessibility
How will you ensure efficient and equitable resolution of matters that come before your court, and that all residents — regardless of their financial means — have meaningful access to legal resources?
As judge, I will uphold and protect the constitutional rights of every individual who appears before the Court. Equal justice under the law is a constitutional mandate and a fundamental duty of the judiciary. Those that meet the criteria for appointed counsel, will be assigned a vetted attorney to advocate on their behalf. The integrity of a judge is dependent on neutrality and following the law. Every person who enters the courtroom should have confidence that their rights will be protected and their case will be decided fairly without bias. Victims, defendants, witnesses, attorneys, and members of the public are all entitled to fair, impartial, and respectful treatment. Upholding that principle is both my obligation and my commitment.
