Attorney General
Nathan Johnson
Democrat
Qualifications
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
As a Texas state senator, I passed more than 100 bills affecting virtually every policy space; built coalitions and led with independence and political judgment; commercial litigation practice.
Elections
How would you protect Texans’ voting rights while maintaining election security?
Enforce existing election security laws without bias or political motive. Work closely with counties to ensure all rules are followed, election workers are not harassed, and voters are not intimidated. Challenge federal overreach in court (example: attempt to immediately block mail-in voting).
Immigration
How would you address immigration issues affecting our state while ensuring all individuals in Texas have access to due process protections?
Immigration concerns the AG related to public safety, individual constitutional rights, and separation of powers. Where appropriate I will work with federal authorities, but will not re-direct the AG’s office away from its constitutional and statutory obligations. I will use investigative powers to counter threats from border activity and ensure that federal officers respect constitutional rights.
Ethics
How would you increase public trust that the office is acting fairly and ethically?
It took time to lose the public trust; restoring it will take time also. I will end the culture of corruption and politically-motivated investigations and lawsuits, and direct the office toward functions it was intended to serve: consumer protection, fair market enforcement, investigating and fighting corruption, assisting law enforcement, upholding the rule of law and preserving individual rights
Litigation
What is your position on legal actions against other states that provide abortion medications?
Texas law does not have extra-territorial jurisdiction.
