U.S. Representative, District 36
Rhonda Hart
Democrat
Infrastructure
What is your approach to federal infrastructure investment, and how would you prioritize funding for energy, transportation, flood mitigation, and resilience needs in your district?
Flood mitigation first. Congress authorized the Coastal Texas Project at $35 billion in 2022; the federal share so far is $5.5 million. That’s a rounding error. Fund it alongside drainage and buyouts that protect people faster. Energy: Fund the Sabine-Neches waterway, but also grid hardening. CD 36 powers the country but also went dark during Uri and Beryl. Transportation: I-10 and 146 carry evacuation and freight in the same lanes. Rural bridges get load-posted and never fixed.
Inflation
If elected to office, what will you do to address rising costs, especially with regard to groceries, childcare, and housing?
The first thing we can do to lower prices would be to end the tariff policies that have been created during this administration. At the same time, we need to end the needless wars in the Middle East. We need to reopen childcare subsidies that have been cancelled. I would also support a freeze on increasing housing costs during this trying time. We also need to consider raising the federal minimum wage. In some areas, even $15/hour isn’t a living wage.
Immigration
What is your position on federal immigration enforcement and detention policies? What specific changes, if any, would you support to how those policies are implemented?
I do not support the current immigration and detention practices. What exists now is a mobile hit squad with a budget. We need to disband this current ICE force and return to a humane type of enforcement. I would support all measures to eliminate the current ICE program.
Voting
What changes, if any, to current laws related to voter registration, voter ID, and mail-in ballots would you support and why?
We already have a wonderful voter ID system in this country. Only American citizens can vote, and we need to respect that. I would change current laws to allow same-day voter registration, especially in Texas (we currently have 30 days before the election to register). I would support mail-in voting for the state of Texas as well.
