Backlog
How will you address the case backlog in your court to ensure timely resolution for all parties?
I will work to prevent case backlogs by personally asking the parties about the reasons for any delays after they have been given a reasonable amount of time to resolve issues among themselves. In many cases, the parties (prosecution and defense) need some time to gather & review evidence, interview witnesses, and negotiate with each other. The ultimate goal is to prevent unnecessary delays which can be a burden on the alleged victims and the accused person.
Efficiency/accessibility
How will you ensure efficient and equitable resolution of matters that come before your court, and that all residents — regardless of their financial means — have meaningful access to legal resources?
I will ensure the efficient and equitable resolution of cases by maintaining an active role in the preparation and management of the court’s docket. This approach enables me to identify potential issues promptly and address matters that could otherwise delay the timely disposition of cases. In this misdemeanor criminal court, any person who is determined to be indigent and unable to afford legal representation will be appointed counsel. The appointment of counsel ensures meaningful access to competent legal representation and protects individuals from being required to represent themselves unless they voluntarily choose that option.
