I’m a Texas mom sick of big political donors buying influence on our schools and government. My activism focuses on social and economic justice via my podcast, “I’m a Muslim (And That’s Okay!)”
Budget Surplus
How do you think Texas should use its Budget Surplus?
Let’s invest in Texas, not in foreign countries. We must divest from Texas’ $280 million in Israel bonds – no more Texas taxpayer money for ANY foreign bonds. I support using the budget surplus for programs that serve Texans, like public schools, healthcare, and affordable housing. I don’t take PAC money, so I work for Texans, not donors. No more tax breaks or handouts to big donors!
Educational Savings Accounts (ESAs)
What oversight measures will you support to ensure that ESAs (school vouchers) are funded and administered transparently?
The school voucher program drains money out of our public schools and gives handouts to private schools and education vendors. As Comptroller I would use all legal means and public pressure to end this program and focus on equitable funding for our public schools. Every Texas child should have equal access to an excellent free public school education.
Budget Management
How will you ensure budget transparency so taxpayers can easily see how their money is allocated and spent?
The Comptroller office’s website should be much more user-friendly and accessible. It should have clear infographics and charts. There should be an English AND Spanish version of the website. Just like TxDOT has billboards about safe driving, the Comptroller’s office should sponsor billboards about the state budget. Most Texans would be surprised to see our state’s budget priorities.
Efficiency
What changes would you make, if any, to the office of the comptroller?
The Comptroller’s office should be run with honesty, straightforwardness and dedication to the betterment of Texans. Audits must be done without bias. Let’s depoliticize Texas taxes, spending, and investments. The Comptroller’s office should decline to enforce unconstitutional laws, like the Anti-Boycott of Israel Law and the Anti-Fossil Fuel Boycott Law.
