State Representative, District 131
Staci Childs
Democrat
Qualifications
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I’m an attorney, educator, and former member of the Texas State Board of Education, where I represented more than 1.9 million Texans. That experience taught me to navigate complex policy issues. My legal training has prepared me to analyze legislation and understand its consequences. More importantly, I know the communities of House District 131. I have spent time listening to parents, educators, senior and business owners, as well as working families. I bring a combination of legal knowledge, public policy experience, and proven elected leadership with a strong commitment to constituent service.
Healthcare
Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation. What steps would you take as a state representative to ensure access to affordable healthcare, including mental health services, for residents who are currently uninsured or underserved in your district?
As a state representative, I would support expanding access to Medicaid and other coverage options for low-income Texans who are currently falling through the gaps. This issue has particularly affected Black and Brown families and other historically underserved communities. In House District 131, many families are working hard but still face barriers to affordable healthcare, from the cost of insurance to limited access to providers and transportation challenges, especially in the senior community. We need to make the information readily available and ensure it reaches the community.
Education
What measures would you support to ensure adequate state funding for public schools and accountability for taxpayer funds used in voucher or education savings account programs?
Two pressing issues in District 131 are economic instability and health disparities. Too many families are struggling with rising costs for housing, food, transportation, and healthcare. Economic hardship also affects our schools. Students cannot reach their full potential when families face food insecurity, unstable housing, or lack access to basic resources. I will support legislation that expands workforce opportunities, affordable housing, and food access, and that invests in public schools and student support services. I will also work to expand preventive and mental healthcare and maternal health services, with measurable goals of increasing state funding and access to community-based resources in underserved areas.
Issues
What are the two most pressing issues unique to your district, and what specific, measurable actions would you take to address them during your term?
I support increasing state investment in teacher pay, special education, school safety, instructional resources, and other rising costs so districts can meet students’ needs without placing additional burdens on local taxpayers. I oppose diverting public education dollars to private schools. When taxpayer funds are used for vouchers or education savings accounts, accountability must follow the dollar through strong financial oversight, audits, transparency, and safeguards against fraud and misuse.
