Accountability
What will you do to promote the just, prompt, and affordable resolution of cases that come before your court?
Drawing on my experience as a former felony associate judge and criminal defense attorney, I will actively manage the court’s docket while ensuring that efficiency never comes at the expense of fairness or due process. I will establish clear scheduling expectations, conduct meaningful status conferences, set firm but realistic trial dates, and continuances only for good cause. I will regularly review aging cases to identify issues to resolution, prioritize cases with individuals in custody, and address discovery or scheduling barriers early. When appropriate and lawful, I will use remote proceedings for routine matters to reduce unnecessary travel, missed work, and expense. My courtroom will be prepared, consistent, and respectful to all
Bail
In setting bail amounts, how will you balance Texas’s constitutionally mandated bail requirements with other conditions of release including minimizing any public safety threat the defendant may present to the community? Please discuss both first time and repeat offenders.
Bail decisions must be individualized and based on the law and evidence not a fixed schedule. I will consider all the factors and follow the law afforded by our Texas Constitution such as the alleged offense, ability to make bail, appearance history, criminal record, community ties, and safety of the victim and public. For first-time offenders, I will consider the least restrictive conditions that reasonably ensure appearance and safety. For repeat offenders, I will closely examine prior offenses, failures to appear, and compliance with earlier release conditions. A prior record will not dictate the result, but documented danger or repeated noncompliance may justify stricter conditions or denial of bail when appropriate.
