Lieutenant Governor
Vikki Goodwin
Democrat
Qualifications
What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?
I’ve served 8 years in the TX Legislature and have worked across the aisle to pass meaningful laws. I’m a small business owner, mom, wife, involved community leader, graduate of UT & the LBJ School.
Women’s Health
What changes need to be made to Texas abortion laws to ensure women have access to proper medical care in the event of pregnancy complications?
Too many women are dying in Texas due to pregnancy complications. Texas has the highest number of deaths in the US due to pregnancy/postpartum issues. Women need to be able to make their own personal, private healthcare decisions in consultation with their doctors, and doctors need to be able to practice their full scope of medicine without fear of losing their license or going to prison.
Water
What legislation would you support to address the electricity and water demands of data centers while maintaining reliability and affordability for Texans?
Legislation should: 1) require data center developers to provide information about how much water and energy they will use and where it will come from, 2) ensure costs for new transmission are not pushed onto household ratepayers, 3) end all data center sales tax exemptions, 4) allow counties land use authority and strengthen in cities, 5) ensure energy and water needs don’t exceed capacity.
Education
What would you do to ensure that public schools are adequately and reliably funded?
The Texas Constitution calls for the provision of a free public education, not private education. I would end the voucher program in order to better fund our public schools. We must catch up to inflation; increase the basic allotment to at least $7500/student with a provision to keep up with inflation through automatic adjustments. Simplify the formula, and base it on enrollment not attendance.
Elections
What election legislation would you bring to the floor?
I would bring: 1) online voter registration, 2) improvements to vote by mail: no numbers required on the back of the envelope, online mail-in ballot request processing, 3) college student IDs accepted as forms of identification, and 4) improved high school civics classes. Given the recent attempts to decrease the number of polling locations in some counties, better polling location requirements.
