Before taking the bench in January, 2019, I was a civil trial litigator. I handled anywhere from 400-600 civil cases from start to finish. I am board certified in personal injury trial law and I am a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. This experience is important because the 295th is a civil trial court. Since 2019, I have tried approximately 40-50 cases each year, have reduced the court's docket from over 4,000 cases to 2,500. I have the third lowest docket. I started the position knowing how to try a civil case, knowing the rules of procedure and evidence, and have learned how to apply these skills fairly to ensure that all who come before the court are treated with dignity and respect and receive the justice they deserve.
Balancing fair and equitable justice with the necessity of having to move a docket in a county the size of Harris County is a pressing issue for all the district courts. In the last 7 years I have worked hard, put in some serious hours, denied a lot of continuances, especially on old cases, and have tried a great number of cases. My clearance rate is consistently between 100% and 135%.
Another equally pressing challenge facing the entire judiciary is the attack on separation of powers. The judiciary is facing an unprecedented attack from the legislative and executive branches of government. I'm not sure I have a plan except to remain strong and attempt to keep the judiciary strong, independent and as a separate branch of government.
