Michelle Williams
For 26 years, I have dedicated my career to education and advocacy. Currently, I serve as the president of the Houston Education Association, one of the key teachers' unions within Houston ISD. My work with the union has provided me with extensive training in public education and legislative policy. I have lobbied at the state capitol, delivered speeches at school board and City Council meetings, and collaborated with parents and community members to successfully oppose harmful ballot initiatives. My commitment to championing education and supporting our communities remains unwavering.
Addressing the TEA's Takeover of Public Schools
To counter the recent state interventions in our public school systems, led by TEA Commissioner Morath and Governor Abbott, I will introduce legislation to establish Teacher-Powered Schools. This initiative will grant educators the autonomy to make key decisions for their own campuses, empowering them to best serve their students.
Ensuring Affordable Healthcare
I am committed to improving healthcare access for all Texans. I will author and support legislation to expand Medicaid, ensuring more residents receive the care they need. Additionally, I will advocate for school district employees to receive the same comprehensive healthcare benefits currently offered to state employees.
