Matthew Ruben Perez
I have practiced criminal defense for nearly ten years. In the last 3 years through the Harris County Managed Assigned Counsel program, I have accepted misdemeanor court appointments. To qualify for these appointments, I was required to meet rigorous standards, including serving as first chair in jury trials from voir dire through verdict. As such, these cases require me to assess and prepare diligently, and advocate effectively on their behalf.

My daily presence in the courtroom has provided me with valuable insight into the conditions necessary to maintain public safety, while efficiently managing a demanding docket.
First, I believe cases should not be unreasonably stalled without reason. Courts have a responsibility to move cases forward in a timely
manner. Preventing cases from unreasonable delay is crucial in maintaining an
efficient court system. When courts work efficiently, it serves the interest of
justice, provides closure for victims, minimizes burdens on defendants, and
reduces the strain on court resources.

Second, due to rising costs all parties (victims and the accused) are having to choose between coming to court or earning a living. At the onset of each case, I feel it is necessary that all parties know we will work with them to make sure they are heard and their rights are protected.
