Katherine 'Kat' Thomas
I bring a combination of legal expertise, judicial experience, and community‐centered leadership that makes me well‐qualified to continue serving on the 184th District Court bench. My qualifications include years of experience presiding over felony criminal matters, including complex cases that require careful legal analysis and consistent application of the law. I bring a strong command of courtroom procedure, evidentiary rules, and constitutional protections that ensures proceedings are fair, efficient, and grounded in due process. I have demonstrated the ability to manage a high‐volume docket while maintaining transparency, accessibility, and respect for all parties.
Two pressing issues that I face and will face in the office of 184th District Court include case backlogs and public safety/crime resolutions. Since taking the bench in 2022, the 184th's docket size has reduced by over 50%. We've added associate & visiting judges to preside over more cases, expanded jury operations and implemented additional diversion programs to clear backlogs and improve timeliness. I've addressed crime and public safety by tackling the root causes of crime through the Emerging Adult Docket, piloted in 2024 to provide structured intervention for participants between ages 17-25 facing non-violent charges. This docket provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to reduce recidivism and prevent recalcitrant behavior.
